Since 2004, a group called HeadCount has set up voter registration tables at concerts by the likes of Dave Matthews Band, the Allman Brothers Band, and members of the Grateful Dead and Phish. But voter registration ain't just for jam band fans. Recently, HeadCount has partnered with My Morning Jacket, Wilco, and Colin Meloy and the Decemberists.

These new collaborations are in service of HeadCount's goal for this election year, which is to register 100,000 voters at 1,000 concerts. No matter the genre content of those shows, you've got to admit it's an admirable goal, and it's an effort in which anyone can participate just by seeing one of the aforementioned bands live.

So keep a lookout for HeadCount at shows by the aforementioned bands throughout year, especially if you're not yet registered to vote. Also know that HeadCount tables will be at plenty of big festivals this year, including Bonnaroo, Virgin, and Farm Aid.

Seattle's Noise for the Needy festival will pump the decibels for charity at venues across the city from June 11-15. Among the artists performing are Talib Kweli, YACHT, the Black Angels, Matt & Kim, Two Gallants, Grayskul, Math and Physics Club, BOAT, the Warlocks, and Gabriel Teodros.

Proceeds from this year's Noise for the Needy go to Urban Rest Stop, "an organization that provides a clean, safe, and welcoming facility where individuals and families can come and use restrooms, shower, and laundry facilities in Seattle at no cost to patrons," according to a press release.

A month-early Noise for the Needy kick-off event will take place at Seattle's Triple Door on May 14. At that show, writer and performer David Schmader will host an annotated screening of Showgirls, a funny little undertaking about which you can read here.

It's a busy May for sound manipulator and vinyl installation artist Philip Jeck. He'll release his fifth solo album for Touch on May 13, and it's his grittiest record yet. Actually, we can't guarantee that, but it is called Sand, so that's got to count for something, right?

Either way, the rest of Jeck's May and early June finds him playing live dates scattered between the UK and Australia. Cue the "Fanfares"! [MORE...]

Dapper fellow Jarvis Cocker is working on a follow-up to his solo debut, 2006's Jarvis. But he isn't exactly chomping at the bit to get it out there. As he recently told NME, he's got "vague ideas" about the record, which he'd ideally like to do "before the end of the year." (Jarvis' label, Rough Trade, confirms that it will probably be 2009 before we hear a new album from him.)

Mr. Cocker also laid a pair of possible song titles on NME: "The Usual" and "Girls Like It Too", the latter of which is apparently about male perceptions of female libido. Visions of hair metal tunes are dancing in my head, but if anybody can tackle that one tastefully, it'd be this gentleman right here.

Jarvis, as you know, joins Animal Collective, the Hold Steady, and all your other fave raves at this summer's Pitchfork Music Festival. But the Jarvster isn't about to let a trip to the colonies begin and end with the Second City, so he's lined up a pair of New York dates following his stint in Union Park.

Your next chance to see Jarvis in action is May 23, when he gives that very intriguing songwriting lecture as part of the Brighton Festival. [MORE...]

At present, however, she's only got one tour date to her name: a stop at the Ugglan Festival in Stockholm, Sweden on May 15.
For a fun time, turn to one of your co-workers and attempt to read the tracklist below out loud. [MORE...]

For a while there, a couple years ago, it seemed like Oxford Collapse were putting out records on an almost monthly basis. Lucky for us, they were all pretty good, and lucky for them, after a period of extreme prolificacy, the Brooklyn trio had a little time to unwind.

Apparently, they didn't take it. In between tours and more tours last year and earlier in this one, the band managed to crank out enough material for a single, an EP, and a double album, all due in the next few months. Let's run 'em down, shall we?

First up is the "Spike of Bensonhurst" 7", due May 13 from Flameshovel. Backed with "Bloopers", the record is limited to 500 copies, 100 of which will switch out the usual black vinyl with eye-fondling orange vinyl. Buyers will also note that every purchase of the 7" includes MP3 downloads of its tunes.

Then there's The Hann-Byrd EP, so named in tribute to Little Man Tate himself, actor Adam Hann-Byrd. The five song set comes on 500 12"s and all the digital downloads you can shake a credit card at. It's due June 10 from Comedy Minus One.

As for the double LP, we know precious little about it so far, save the title, the label, and the approximate month of its release. Bits, as it's called, is due in August from Sub Pop.

In the midst of all this, Oxford Collapse have a date in New York over the weekend (opening for the Narrator's final show) and a two-week tour of the States to attend to in June. Are you ready to rock? It would seem you have clicked on the wrong news story. Sub Pop signee Mirman is out on tour as we speak, hitting a few comedy festivals and more than a few rock clubs as he traverses this country of ours.

The release of Spiritualized's sixth studio record, Songs in A&E, is approaching at warp speed. Thus, J. Spaceman and co. have decided to expand their itinerary with North American dates, starting with their appearance at the Pitchfork Music Festival. These new shows take place in the midst of an already sizable world tour, and, in contrast to Spiritualized's previous "Acoustic Mainlines" performances, they feature a full electric band. Given Spiritualized's predilection for thunderous electric performances, we advise securing your internal organs in advance.

Before they arrive on North American shores, Spiritualized have a European tour that begins May 18 in Cambridge, England.

Songs in A&E arrives in the UK on May 26 (Universal/Spaceman) and in the U.S. on May 27 (Fontana International/Spaceman). And remember that iTunes thing we told you about last week?

Have you seen this crazy "Pancake Mountain" show? It is way crazy, dude. A bunch of puppets, a bunch of indie rockers, and a whole mess of kids get together to say and do the darndest things, and even more wackiness ensues from the mixture that you can possibly imagine.

The fifth "Pancake Mountain" DVD-- collecting episodes nine and 10, plus a handful of bonus features-- is out now, and boy howdy, is the lineup of talent impressive.

The DVD features appearances from the likes of Wayne Coyne, M.I.A., Built to Spill, Iggy Pop, Meat Puppets, X, Nellie McKay, Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins, PSAPP, Scissor Sisters, Northern State and so on. Your next dance party/babysitting gig/drug binge so needs this.

As always, check your local listings to see if there's a "Pancake Mountain" anywhere near your airwaves.

Here's Nellie McKay with "Pancake Mountain"'s Rufus Leaking:

The 2008 edition of Movement, Detroit's electronic music festival, is sponsored in part by highway-adjacent restaurant chain Big Boy. And, uh, if there's one thing I don't wanna do after a Santa Fe Stuffed Potato Pancake from Big Boy, it's any kind of movement.

Still, if anyone could coax me out of my food coma, it would have to be the folks who comprise the lineup for this year's Movement. Hometown hero Carl Craig, Girl Talk, the Cool Kids, Pete Rock, Peanut Butter Wolf, Richie Hawtin, fucking Newcleus and Egyptian Lover, Kevin Saunderson, Heartthrob, Deepchord Presents Echospace, Alex Smoke, Cassy, Cobblestone Jazz, Tycho, Josh Wink, Speedy J, Moby, and many more will help you work off those onion rings when they bring the Movement to various stages across Motor City's Hart Plaza hood May 24-26.

Now that Coldplay have revealed the release details, first song, and cover art for Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (which, if their previously pleasant/innocuous musical habits hold, could win an award for most incongruously violent album cover ever), it's time for the band to unveil the live portion of their world domination plan. They've done just that with the announcement of the North American leg of their upcoming world tour (via Billboard.com / Coldplay's website).

When we spoke with Stereolab's Tim Gane a few weeks back about the veteran group's forthcoming album Chemical Chords, he mentioned a North American tour the band were plotting around September. Let it never be said Mr. Gane is not a man of his word.

Plans for Stereolab to wind their way across the continent are presently in place, with the dates kicking off September 20 in Costa Mesa, California. Openers for the first leg of the tour are still up in the air, but Laetitia Sadier will play double duty on the second leg, as her side project Monade is scheduled to take the stage before Stereolab.

Chemical Chords is due August 18 worldwide and August 19 in the U.S. via Duophonic UHF Disks/4AD. [MORE...]

At whatever point in the summer that 30 minute, 10 track, Danger Mouse-produced, Cat Power-boosted Beck LP we've been talking about a lot this week happens to arrive, it'll do so in the UK thanks to the folks at his new overseas imprint, XL Recordings. The disc, about which we know literally nothing not contained within these two sentences, will hit the U.S. from Interscope sometime relatively soon.

Says XL founder Richard Russell in a press release: "We can't wait for everyone to hear the extraordinary music that he and Danger Mouse have made together." Says us: As representives of "everyone," we concur. We can't wait.

The tune they've chosen is "Gardenia", and they are backing it with a new song called "Walk Into the Mirror".

The band will walk into the tour vehicle for festival dates this month and European shows in June. Support on the UK shows comes from Domino mates Wild Beasts. Then in August, the band plays Lollapalooza.

It's a recording of a live show from 1997, and it's all covers. [MORE...]

Common, please slow down! Not a year after the Chicago MC released Finding Forever, with a whole mess of activity in the interim, he has given word of its follow-up, not to mention a blockbuster acting role.

According to a Billboard.com report, Common's eighth album is called Invincible Summer, and it is tentatively scheduled for a mid-July release. (However, Common's MySpace page says it will be out June 24.)

Billboard.com calls the sound of Summer "electro-tinged," which is an interesting departure from Common's usual M.O. of beats based around dusty old jazz and soul samples. With a tune called "Runaway" "drawing its guitar riff from Pat Benatar's 'Love Is a Battlefield'," we're kind of imagining Electro Circus.

"I created this music for the summer time. It's about feeling good. This is the type of music I felt was missing from my body of work," Common told Billboard.com regarding Invincible Summer's musical direction, and he certainly surrounded himself with respectable contributors. The record's production comes from the Neptunes and Outkast producer Mr. DJ. Cee-Lo, Santogold, and Neptunes associates Chester French lent their singing and rhyming talents. Frequent Common collaborator Kanye West was absent from the proceedings because he was preoccupied with work on his "Glow in the Dark" tour.

"Universal Mind Control (U.M.C.)" looks to be Invincible Summer's first single, and it is planned for release at the end of May. Billboard.com's preliminary tracklist for the album is after the jump.

As for Common's blossoming acting career, he appears alongside Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman, and James McAvoy in the pretty sweet-looking Wanted, which hits theaters June 27. Also, according to a Variety report, Common will join Christian Bale's John Connor in a new Terminator movie called Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. Common's character is "a freedom fighter and member of Connor's inner circle," and the movie is scheduled to appear in theaters May 22, 2009. [MORE...]

The third LP from Portland's symphonically synthy duo Talkdemonic, Eyes at Half Mast, is due September 2 from the Arena Rock Recording Company. The band road-tested the set's 14 tunes over months of extensive touring, bringing those tunes to the height of their demonic-ness before committing them to tape.

Talkdemonic have plans to get back out there in June with a handful of dates well in advance of Half Mast's release, most of which find them in close proximity to fellow PDXers the Helio Sequence. [MORE...]

Plus: Flight on the Conchords, Patton Oswalt, Fred Armisen, Sarah Silverman, Aimee Mann

Earlier this week, Los Angeles venue Largo closed its doors for the last time. Fear not, left coast live music nuts: Largo will open an entirely different set of doors when they move to the former Coronet Theatre next month. But in celebration of the Largo Los Angelenos have come to know and love, owner Mark Flanagan and filmmaker Andrew van Baal have teamed up for Largo, a new documentary film about the storied nightspot.

And what a sendoff the Largo flick will be, sporting as it does musical performances from Andrew Bird, Flight of the Conchords, Fiona Apple, Jon Brion (who held a residency at Largo for some time), Eels frontman Mark Oliver "E" Everett, David Garza, Jackson Browne, Grant Lee Phillips, Tom Brousseau, Aimee Mann and hubby Michael Penn, Men at Work vocalist Colin Hay, Nickel Creek, and a whole slew of others.

Largo also made a point to make with the funny, and a ton of yuk-makers pop up in the film, including P4k office boy Fred Armisen, Zach Galifianakis, Patton Oswalt, Sarah Silverman, Greg Proops, Paul F. Tompkins, and John C. Reilly. The film makes its world premiere June 22 at the Los Angeles Film Festival.

Springsteen really needs to do something about that thing growing under his lower lip

A few weeks back, Pitchfork.TV premiered an interview with members of Neurosis and Mastodon as the two metal institutions were about to share a bill in Brooklyn. It was an inspired pairing. And this June, after their set at Bonnaroo, Mastodon will share yet another bill of note, this time with Iron Maiden. Makes sense.

But then, well, Mastodon will join the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival as it stalks around North America through the steamy season. Indeed, a metal package tour with Mastodon near the top of the marquee could be pure awesomeness, were the other bands billed over Mastodon not Slipknot, Disturbed, and Dragonforce. (C'mon dude, that Dragonforce song in Guitar Hero III is pretty sweet.-- Ed)

I mean, good for those dudes for getting paid, and good for the attendees of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. But hey, a list of Mastodon shows you probably won't be attending is after the jump.

Something totally unrelated: that up there is a photo of Brent Hinds and Brann Dailor bro-ing down with Bruce Springsteen in Atlanta in late April. They may call it the "No Chiefs Allowed Tour", but El-P and Dizzee Rascal's North American jaunt is packed to the gills with towering talent. Aside from their own formidable presences, the tour includes appearances by Def Jux artists and associates Aesop Rock, Kidz in the Hall, Busdriver, Mr. Dibbs, and Mighty Quin. And Aaron LaCrate is serving as Dizzee's DJ. Not bad, gentlemen.

"No Chiefs Allowed" kicks off tonight (May 8) in Washington, D.C.

In other news, Dizzee has a smattering of European dates this spring and summer, and El-P has a new blog.

The world lost a country music legend today. Singer Eddy Arnold, a chart staple for many years, passed away near Nashville this morning, according to reports in The New York Times and on Billboard.com. He was just a week shy of his 90th birthday.

Arnold rose to prominence in the years immediately following World War II, earning the nickname "The Tennessee Plowboy" and deploying a string of hits that dominated the country charts from the late 1940s on through the late 1960s. Indeed, his presence on the country charts is unmatched to this day. Arnold continued recording well into this decade, releasing his 100th album, After All This Time, in 2005. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1966.

Later in his career, the crooner shed his plowboy image and adopted an urban gentleman look that complemented his songs' new lush arrangements. Those songs, which include hits "Make the World Go Away", "Somebody Like Me", and "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye", often towed a line between the traditional country & western style and a more mainstream pop sensibility. Two of Arnold's songs were later covered by Elvis Presley, whom Arnold is said to have influenced.

The singer, whose wife passed away earlier this year, is survived by two children, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

It's still more than a month away from the beginning of their intercontinental summer trek, and My Morning Jacket have already lined up a bunch of dates that will take them practically into the fall. Damn near every last one of these new appearances has been designated "An Evening With My Morning Jacket," though the lone exception-- a date at Red Rocks in late August-- will find you sharing your evening with both MMJ and the Black Keys.
My Morning Jacket's new one, Evil Urges, is due June 9 in the UK and mainland Europe from new overseas label Rough Trade and the following day in North America on ATO. The not-too-distant future holds the band's appearance on the Shia LaBoeuf-hosted episode of "Saturday Night Live" this weekend, and a Jim James solo acoustic date in London on May 22. [MORE...]
